Challenge Week

Students United and United Way of the EUP challenge you to volunteer between August 2 and August 7!  Can you devote a whole week or even a few hours to helping your community?  We have a variety of events lined up; everyone who volunteers has a chance to win prizes, and if you accept the challenge and make it to five events, you'll get an "I Survived Challenge Week" shirt.  Here are the week's events:

Monday - "Bigger and Better."  We're meeting for the Challenge Week Kickoff in the courthouse lawn (319 Court Street.)  Afterwards, contestants will register teams of four or less. Each team starts with a paper clip and travels around our community to ask for a “Bigger and Better” donation. The team with the “Biggest and Best” donation wins. Time: between 10AM and 4PM.

Tuesday - "Art from the Heart."  Come visit our booth at the Sault Summer Arts Festival to create art from your heart for the elderly population in our community. Time: between 10AM and 8PM.

Wednesday - "Everything but the Kitchen Sink Drive" & "Lunchtime Cookout."  We’ll be on the corner of Ashmun & Portage from Noon to 7PM collecting donations to distribute to local non-profit agencies.  Here's a list of suggestions.  Also, from Noon to 2PM, come on down and enjoy a cookout to support Ashley Potter and family! Time:  between Noon and 7PM.

Thursday - "Battle of the Bands."  Rock out with us to battle hunger at the Strahl Theater by raising money for Kids Against Hunger!  Admission is $5, start time is 7PM.  If you'd like to compete, here's the entry form.  Good luck!

Friday - "Free Compliments & Popcorn."  Help us demonstrate how even the smallest kindness can make a big difference!  Inspired by “Compliment Guys” as seen at the 2010 Youth Philanthropy & Service Camp, teams will pay passersby compliments to brighten their day.  Time:  between 10AM and 6PM.

Saturday - Prize Drawing in front of the United Way.  To register for volunteer opportunities, please contact Tara Amarose at (906) 632-3700 Ext 4 #, or email her at taraa@unitedwayeup.org.

National Service Capitol Hill Day

The next Voices for National Service Capitol Hill Day will be September 15-16 in Washington, DC. Registration will be open online later this month. Please mark your calendars now.

Each September, national service alumni, program staff, service partners, and corporate sponsors convene in Washington, DC, for one day of coordinated meetings with Members of Congress and their staffs. The National Service Capitol Hill Day helps to establish and strengthen relationships with our legislators and provides an excellent opportunity for constituents to explain how federal funds are used locally. In 2009, Hill Day participants from 35 states and the District of Columbia visited 150 congressional offices.

The Capitol Hill Day will start on the afternoon of September 15 with an orientation session. Participants will learn tips for conducting successful meetings, receive an update on current policy issues, and collect issue briefs and background material that will help them prepare for their meetings. On September 16, there will be a Kick-Off event in the Capitol building, followed by a full day of office visits.

Due to the limited amount of meeting space in many congressional offices, we may need to set limits on the number of Hill Day registrants from certain congressional districts. We encourage you to register early to secure your place and to give us sufficient notice of your planned participation. We want to maximize interest and schedule a productive day of meetings for as many as possible.

Voices for National Service will announce when registration has opened.

EUP CDRC Mystery Dinner Theater

EUP Mediate asks you to "save the date" of October 16, 2010.  That evening will be the center's second mystery dinner theater fundraiser at the Dream Maker Theater.  There won't be any ghost this time, just familiar characters trying to solve a mystery amid humor and music.
